Your year-end contribution will
help us to:

  • Pay the remaining debt owed on this land
    Improve drainage and halt erosion
  • Manage encroaching vegetation to stabilize the existing works
  • Develop interpretive trails so that others may visit this hallowed ground and understand the sacrifices made here

Join the ranks of those who are defending
the trenches at Cedar Creek.

We need your help with a critical mission.  Although it has been nearly 150 years since their construction, the historic trenches at Cedar Creek are still under attack.  Only now, instead of Confederate troops, they are being assaulted by forces of nature.  Please consider a year-end gift to help defend these earthworks.

In 2000, the Foundation purchased 134 acres of battlefield property containing extensive earthworks built by the Federal XIX Corps overlooking Cedar Creek.  These defensive positions were of little use when Confederate troops rushed into their rear on the morning of October 19, 1864.  Today, they are some of the best preserved Civil War trenches still standing.

However, our work is not yet finished and the earthworks are in desperate need of stabilization!  Storm water runoff and snow melt is draining into the trenches, causing erosion and the build up of dirt and debris.  Trees and other vegetation have grown up in the works and threaten to destroy the earthen walls.  Finally, we need to expand visitor access to this important battlefield land by improving our parking areas and interpretive trails so that all people may experience and appreciate the historic events that took place here.  Of the initial $1.3 million purchase price, $120,000 of debt remains.  We need to retire the debt remaining on this property to allow us to focus funds on managing and interpreting this key battlefield tract.
